Roamin’ for the Roman Circus

by Jo Hayes on 19 February, 2010

This is a shameless request for money. Not for me though. On Sunday 21st February at 10 a.m. I will be setting out with colleagues Theresa Higgins and Nick Barlow (both serious walkers) and others, plus the dog, from the site of the starting gates of Roman Colchester’s racing track, the Circus, on a 12-mile sponsored walk. The event is in aid of Colchester Archaeological Trust’s fundraising campaign to acquire the former Sergeants’ Mess building and the starting gates site (a scheduled ancient monument) for conservation and use as a Trust headquarters, a visitor centre and a museum. Bob Russell MP, who has been campaigning tirelessly for this cause, is setting out from the same place, same time, on an “urban” roam of about three miles which people can join for £5.  Cash, cheques, we’re not fussy, as long as it helps the town secure these wonderful assets for the future. Or you can donate by going to the campaign website (paste http://www.romancircus.org into your browser) and clicking on the Charity Choice or Justgiving button. Castle Ward Councillor Nick Barlow, who is much better at computer stuff than I am, has put together a route map which you can view at http://maps.google.co.uk/maps/ms?ie=UTF8&hl=en&msa=0&msid=112511660633886819380.00047fbae1205352fda01&ll=51.876703,0.884056&spn=0.062102,0.130978&z=13
